The Experience

"You want to see London properly, you eat first, then you go up," the host at The Larch told us while seating the group. That's the whole shape of this evening — a 2-course Italian meal downstairs, then straight up to Sky Garden once you've had time to settle. The Larch sits right opposite the garden, so there's no scrambling across the city; you finish your pasta or pizza, maybe a scoop of gelato or sorbet, and then you're in the lift heading to London's highest public garden. The whole thing takes about two hours from arrival to leaving Sky Garden, and you book a specific timeslot for dinner, so you know exactly when to show up.

Sky Garden itself is the 35th floor of the Walkie Talkie building, and once you're through security and the bag check, you get an hour to walk the actual gardens and take in the view. The audio guide comes through an app you download on WiFi — it's available in five languages and walks you through what you're looking at as the light goes. You'll spot the Shard, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, all of it lit up against the evening skyline. The outdoor terrace closes at 6pm for security, so depending on when you book, you might be looking out from inside, but the view doesn't really change. The whole experience is adults only, 18 and up, and you need photo ID to get in.

The practical bit: arrive on time for your dinner reservation, because late arrivals aren't guaranteed a table. Your ticket is valid only for the date and timeslot you booked, and you have to use your Sky Garden access within an hour of finishing your meal, same day. It's all cashless up there, and once you've paid, there's no refunds or transfers. If you're going with a group bigger than eight, you'll need to contact VoxCity directly to arrange it. Wheelchair access is available throughout — the restaurant, the lift, the gardens, all of it.
