We got picked up outside our hotel—our driver, Mark, texted when he arrived (bit of a relief in the drizzle). The electric taxi was warm inside and there’s this glass roof overhead—so you actually look up and see the lights flickering off the buildings as you ride. Trafalgar Square was first; even with fewer people around, it felt kind of alive. I could smell roasted chestnuts from a vendor somewhere, but maybe that was just my imagination.
Mark had this way of telling stories about each spot that made me forget we were on a “tour.” At Buckingham Palace, he pointed out the Victoria Memorial shining under the streetlights and joked about how he’d never seen the Queen pop out for chips. We stopped for photos whenever we wanted (I took too many of Big Ben—couldn’t help it). The Houses of Parliament look almost unreal at night, their reflections sliding across the Thames. At one point we passed by Westminster Abbey and Mark went quiet for a second—he said sometimes it feels like all of London’s history is just humming under those stones.
We did Tower Bridge and the London Eye too—the colors on the Eye shift every few minutes, which is oddly hypnotic if you stare too long. I’d never noticed how much softer everything sounds at night here; less car noise, more footsteps echoing off old walls. There was time for a quick pint near St. Paul’s Cathedral (Mark recommended a pub where he says tourists rarely go), and I still think about how cozy that felt after being out in the cold air.
The tour ended wherever we wanted—he dropped us off near Battersea Power Station because my partner wanted to see it all lit up (it’s more impressive than I thought). I guess what stuck with me most was how familiar places can feel totally new when you see them like this—with someone who knows all their odd little stories. If you’re considering a London by Night Taxi Tour, don’t overthink it; just go with whoever you’re with and let yourself be surprised.
