The Experience

“You ever wonder how they got those stones all the way out here?” That’s what our driver, Mark, asked as we pulled up to Stonehenge in his black cab — the kind you see in movies, but somehow roomier inside. The wind was sharp and there was this earthy smell, like wet grass and old secrets. Mark handed us our tickets (entry included, which I didn’t realize would save so much time) and pointed out a spot where druids still gather for solstice. He seemed to know everyone at the gate — or maybe he just talks to everyone. Either way, it made things feel less touristy, more like we were tagging along with a friend who happened to know a lot about Neolithic rocks.

The drive from London to Bath took us through these rolling green fields dotted with sheep that looked like little clouds. I tried to nap but kept peeking out the window because every village had its own story (Mark told us about one pub haunted by a headless horseman — not sure if he was joking). When we reached Bath, the sunlight hit those honey-colored buildings and honestly, it did look like someone poured gold over the city. We wandered through the Roman Baths — warm steam rising off the water, that mineral tang in the air — and I tried to imagine Romans doing exactly this two thousand years ago. Our guide explained how the hot springs still bubble up from deep underground; I touched the stone edge and it was slick and warm.

I didn’t expect to care much about architecture but walking past the Royal Crescent and The Circus felt weirdly cinematic. People were sitting on benches eating sandwiches, kids chasing pigeons near Bath Abbey. There was this moment when we crossed Pulteney Bridge and I caught my reflection in a shop window — tired but happy. Lunch wasn’t included but Mark recommended a bakery where I had something called a “Sally Lunn bun” (sweet, pillowy, impossible to eat neatly). On the way back to London I realized I’d barely checked my phone all day. It’s rare for me.
