The Experience

I never thought the English countryside would feel so wide awake at 6:30 in the morning. We left London in a mini-coach while the city was still half-asleep—just a handful of us, swapping sleepy hellos. By the time we reached Stonehenge, the grass was damp and my shoes were already a little muddy (should’ve worn boots). Our guide—Mark, with this dry sense of humor—handed out tickets and let us wander. The stones looked older than time itself. There was a kind of hush around them that made everyone whisper without meaning to. I caught a faint smell of wet earth mixed with sheep somewhere nearby. It felt strange to be there so early, almost like we’d snuck in before history woke up.

Bath was next—a proper city but somehow soft around the edges. Mark walked us through those honey-colored terraces and pointed out where Jane Austen used to stroll (I’m not sure she’d have liked my trainers). Inside the Roman Baths, steam curled up from green water and everything echoed a bit—someone dropped a coin in and it sounded louder than it should’ve. I tried to imagine all those centuries of people coming here for healing or gossip or just to warm their bones. The Assembly Rooms were grand but honestly I was more interested in watching an old couple argue gently over tea outside.

Lacock felt almost too perfect—like someone pressed pause on modern life. There were crooked cottages and cats sunning themselves on windowsills. Mark told us about all the films shot here (Harry Potter fans got excited; I pretended not to be one but failed). Lunch was unhurried—a sandwich from a bakery that smelled like yeast and woodsmoke—and then we drove these winding backroads to Avebury. That village sits right inside its own stone circle, which is wild when you think about it. Sheep grazed between stones bigger than cars and I just stood there for a minute trying to picture what it meant for people who built it. I still think about that view sometimes—the way the sky just hung open above everything.
