The Experience
“That’s where they filmed the Ministry entrance,” our guide said, pointing down Great Scotland Yard. I’d walked past that street before and never noticed anything magical. Just another bit of London. But suddenly I could almost picture the red phone box from the films, tucked between regular old buildings. Our group laughed when someone tried to squeeze in a “Mischief Managed” joke (it didn’t really land, but you have to try).
We wandered through Leicester Square. There’s an actual bronze Harry Potter statue there now, which I didn’t expect. It was busy, but our guide knew how to dodge crowds and slip us into these little moments where you could just stand and look up at Harry on his broomstick. Trafalgar Square felt different after hearing about the film premieres: like you could almost hear echoes of all those fans cheering years ago. The city smells like roasted nuts and traffic fumes here. It’s not Hogwarts, but it has its own kind of magic.
I loved Goodwin’s Court most: narrow cobblestones, black-fronted windows, lamplight even in daylight. It really does feel like Knockturn Alley if you squint a bit. Our guide told us about the dark wizard connections and I caught myself checking over my shoulder for Death Eaters (half joking). The House of MinaLima was a surprise too: actual props from the movies, tucked into this creaky gallery above a shop. You can touch some things if you ask nicely. It smells like old paper and something sweet from downstairs.
The last stop was King’s Cross Station for that Platform 9¾ photo, the trolley half-stuck in the wall is touristy but honestly? Worth it. You get to pick your Hogwarts house scarf (I went Ravenclaw because… why not) and everyone takes turns posing while strangers cheer or giggle nearby. It’s silly but fun. Afterward we poked around the Harry Potter shop next door. I still think about that view of people coming and going under those huge arches, all pretending for a second that magic is real.
