The Experience

There was this echo of footsteps under the steel arches at King’s Cross when we started — not just ours, but everyone else rushing somewhere, and then Reuben waved us over. We hopped on the tube together — two quick rides, just like Harry and Hagrid in Philosopher’s Stone — and ended up in Leadenhall Market. It’s all glass ceilings and old stone, yellow light spilling onto cobblestones even in daylight. Reuben told us about Diagon Alley being filmed here; someone selling flowers winked at me as we passed, which felt oddly magical. Borough Market was next, packed with food stalls shouting out lunch deals. You could smell curry and fresh bread mixing with rain on old brick walls. Apparently that’s where they filmed the Leaky Cauldron scene (I didn’t recognize it until Reuben showed a still from his phone). He kept tossing in little facts about London history too — not just Harry Potter trivia — so it didn’t feel like a kids’ tour at all.

I still think about standing on Millennium Bridge while buses rattled past behind us and St Paul’s Cathedral loomed ahead, grey against the sky. That bridge really did get destroyed in Half-Blood Prince (well, sort of), but today it just vibrated under our feet every time someone jogged by. At Whitehall, Reuben pointed out where they shot Ministry of Magic scenes; tourists milled around but nobody seemed to notice us tracing invisible spells along the pavement. By the end my legs were tired but I didn’t mind — there was this last alleyway (Reuben said Rowling found inspiration there) that felt quieter than anywhere else we’d been all day. Funny how you can walk six kilometers across London and still find a pocket of silence.
