The Experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to actually stand where the Beatles made history in London? I didn’t really know what to expect—maybe a few old buildings and a lot of trivia. But our guide (he’s a real fan, not just reading from a script) started us off right outside Paul McCartney’s house. There was this quiet on the street, just birds and distant traffic, and he pointed up at a window—“That’s where ‘Yesterday’ was finished.” I don’t know why, but that hit me harder than I thought it would. You could almost picture him there, scribbling lyrics while London kept moving outside.

We took the Tube together (I still get lost on those escalators), swapping little stories about which Beatle we liked best. Then—Abbey Road. It’s strange how ordinary the crossing looks until you’re standing there with your shoes off, trying not to laugh while cars wait for you to finish your photo. The wall outside Abbey Road Studios is covered in messages—some funny, some kind of sad—and our guide let us sign it too. The smell of fresh marker ink mixed with something sweet from a bakery nearby. He told us how 80% of their albums were recorded right behind those doors. I tried to imagine all that music echoing through those walls.

After that, we wandered through Soho and stopped at Bag O’Nails (Paul met Linda here—our guide did an impression of Paul’s nervous hello that cracked us up). There was this moment outside Savile Row where everyone got quiet for a second—the spot where they played their last gig on the rooftop. Windy up there, apparently; our guide said you could hear it in the recordings if you listen close enough. Funny how you can feel nostalgia for something you never lived yourself.
