The Experience

You're picked up by a knowledgeable driver-guide who takes you through the Lake District on a route built around Potter's own journeys. The tour opens at Wray Castle, where the 16-year-old Potter spent a summer in 1882 and fell in love with the library. From there you move through Troutbeck valley, past the farm she bought in 1923 to breed Herdwick sheep, and down to Waterhead on Lake Windermere. It's a private tour, so the pace and stops are yours to set. You can linger at viewpoints or move on as you choose.

The heart of the day is Hill Top House in Near Sawrey, the 17th-century stone cottage Potter bought in 1905 with money from her first books. Samuel Whiskers, Jemima Puddleduck and Tom Kitten were all created in this house, and you'll see the rooms where she worked. Before that, you visit Hawkshead, an ancient township with 17th-century buildings, to see the Beatrix Potter gallery: housed in her husband's old office and filled with her original drawings and watercolours. The tour then takes you to Tarn Hows, the mountain lake Potter bought in 1929 and later gave to the National Trust, and ends at Coniston Water, dominated by the Old Man of Coniston rising to 803 metres.

Your driver provides umbrellas, bottled water and hand sanitizer. The vehicle is air-conditioned and cleaned before every tour. Admission tickets to Hill Top House are purchased on the day, and you can request photo stops anywhere along the route. Drop-off is at a destination of your choice within the Lake District.
