The Experience
The tour opens with a scenic drive through Cumbria into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, stopping first at Cowan Bridge to see the Clergy Daughter's School that four Brontë sisters attended. The poor conditions there inspired the brutal Lowood Institution in Charlotte's Jane Eyre, and the guide walks you through the building's history and its lasting impact on her writing. From there, you head into Lancashire to Wycoller village, where a ruined hall sits among ancient bridges and a ford crossing Wycoller Beck. This is the Ferndean Manor of Jane Eyre, and the guide shows you the Gothic details that Charlotte drew from.
The route then crosses the Pennine Moors toward Ponden Hall, a farmhouse that scholars believe inspired elements of both Wuthering Heights and Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. You'll see it from the road and hear the competing theories about which sister used it in her work. The moors themselves (bleak, windswept, and dramatic) are where the sisters walked to escape the industrial smoke of nearby Keighley. Near Top Withens, the ruined farmhouse on the moorland, you experience the landscape Emily described in Wuthering Heights, with its stunted firs and gaunt thorns bent by the north wind. The guide provides context as you travel, explaining how the Industrial Revolution shaped the region and the sisters' imaginations.
The centerpiece is the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth, where the family lived and wrote. After your visit, the guide takes you through the graveyard and down the High Street: largely unchanged since the Brontës walked it 150 years ago. You'll see the Black Bull Inn where Branwell drank himself to death and the Apothecary where he bought laudanum. The church holds the family vault where all but Anne are buried. Throughout, the guide brings the village and its people back to life, connecting the places to the passionate, tragic stories the sisters wrote.

What is the Clergy Daughter's School and why does it matter to Jane Eyre?
Cowan Bridge, the school the Brontë sisters attended as children, inspired the harsh Lowood Institution in Charlotte's novel. The poor conditions and strict regime there left a lasting mark on Charlotte's writing, and the guide shows you the actual building where she and her sisters endured the treatment she later fictionalized.
Do we actually walk on the moors where Emily Brontë found inspiration for Wuthering Heights?
You experience the Pennine Moors from the road and can walk a short distance, but time is limited before moving on to the Parsonage. The guide explains the moorland setting and reads Emily's own description of the landscape, so you understand what she saw when she wrote about Wuthering Heights, even if the walk is brief.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
The tour stops for lunch, but the cost of food and drink is not included in the ticket price. You pay for what you order at the stop.
What's the difference between the Oxenholme and Windermere departure times?
Oxenholme departs at 9:22am and is timed to meet the first train from London Euston heading toward Glasgow on weekdays and Saturdays. Windermere departs at 9:00am. Both return to their starting points after the tour, so you choose based on which station is more convenient for you.
What should I wear and bring for this tour?
Wear comfortable, suitable shoes because there is some walking involved, including uphill sections and uneven or wet terrain. Bring a waterproof coat with a hood: Lake District weather changes quickly, even in summer, and you may encounter rain or wind, especially on the moors.
