The experience

The tour leaves San Salvador and takes roughly 2 hours to reach San Ignacio, the jumping-off point for the mountain. From there, the climb to El Pital's summit takes about 1 hour through forest thick with pine and flowering plants. The air cools as you gain elevation, and the landscape shifts into the humid forest climate of the higher slopes. A 4x4 vehicle handles the rough terrain, and the driver navigates you to the trailhead.

Once on the mountain, you hike several routes across El Pital's peaks. The first walk takes you to the international border with Honduras, where you can see across both countries from the summit. Next comes the hike to Peña Rajada, a rock formation split by a deep crack that you cross using a suspension bridge: the final push to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking much of El Salvador and the city of Ocotepeque just across the border. A medium-low difficulty hike through a small forest with pleasant climate and dense flora leads to this spot. Lunch is served after the morning climbs.

The descent passes Casa de Las Fresas, a strawberry farm where you can see the harvest and taste dishes made from fruit picked on the property. On the drive back to San Salvador, roughly 3 hours, the route includes La Palama in Chalatenango, a high-altitude stop with viewpoints where you can watch the sunset or grab a hot drink. Bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle are provided throughout the day.
