You shop for the food, cook it yourself, and eat what you made with the family who taught you.

A three-hour cooking class in the Western Desert where you learn to prepare authentic Egyptian food alongside a local family, starting with a trip to buy ingredients at the market. The class includes private transportation from your hotel, bottled water and soft drinks, coffee or tea, and visits to a spice market and papyrus museum. You choose whether the meal is breakfast, lunch or dinner, and a guide speaks English or Arabic throughout.

The experience

The day starts with a drive to the market where you pick out fresh ingredients for the meal you'll cook. A local family walks you through their kitchen and teaches you to prepare two or three dishes from their everyday repertoire: options include salad, a main of fata and molokhia, koshary, or rice with bamya and chicken, and a traditional sweet like basbosa, konafa or qatayf. You do the cooking, not watch it. The family corrects your technique and explains why each step matters to the final dish.

Once everything is ready, you sit down and eat together. The meal is the real thing: the food Egyptians cook at home, not a tourist version of it. Private transportation picks you up from your hotel and brings you back, so there's no figuring out how to get there or managing a group schedule. The visit to the spice market and papyrus museum happens on the same outing, built into the morning or afternoon depending on which meal you choose.
