The Experience
The drive out of Cairo was quieter than I expected—just that early haze and our driver humming along. By the time we reached El Ein El Sokhna, you could already smell the sea before you saw it. The hotel staff handed us a key to this little day room right on the sand. Not fancy, but honestly, I just wanted somewhere to toss my bag and change into shorts. Our guide grinned when he saw me hesitate at the water—“It’s warmer than you think,” he promised. He was right.
I spent ages just floating in the Red Sea. It’s salty enough to keep you up without much effort, so I let my arms drift and watched a couple of local families setting up picnics nearby. There’s something about Egyptian beach music—it sort of floats over everything, even when it’s just from someone’s phone. Lunch came on a tray (I asked for mine outside), all grilled fish and warm bread that smelled like anise. I got sunburned on one arm because I forgot to reapply sunscreen—classic.
We had until 4pm before heading back to Cairo, so there was no rush at all. Some folks tried jet skiing (extra cost—I skipped it but kind of wish I hadn’t). Mostly I just sat with my feet in the sand, watching kids build lopsided castles. When our driver waved us over for the ride back, I felt like I’d borrowed someone else’s slow afternoon for a while. Still think about how quiet it felt out there compared to the city.
