The Experience

It’s strange how you can wake up in Cairo and suddenly find yourself under Alexandria’s sky, salt on the air and the city humming outside the window. Our guide—his name was Karim—met us right at the hotel, waving a sign with my name (I always feel awkward about that, but it does make things easy). He started chatting before we’d even left the parking lot, pointing out old movie theaters and telling stories about his grandmother’s favorite pastry shop. The drive went by faster than I expected. Maybe I was just distracted by all the little details: people selling mangoes at traffic lights, laundry flapping from balconies, that kind of thing.

The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa were first. Cool air hit my face as we walked down spiraling steps—honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small underground. Karim handed me his phone flashlight for a better look at the painted walls (my own battery was dead—classic). There was this faint smell of damp stone and something earthy I couldn’t quite place. He explained how Egyptian and Roman symbols mixed together here; I tried to imagine what these tombs looked like when they were new. Afterward, we wandered through the Roman Amphitheatre—kids chasing pigeons across marble seats while our guide pointed out where underwater ruins had been found nearby.

Lunch was at a seaview restaurant—big windows open to the Mediterranean breeze. I ordered fish because Karim said that’s what locals do (“if you ask for pizza here,” he laughed, “they’ll look at you like you’re lost”). The sound of waves mixed with distant car horns from the Corniche. We stopped by Quaitbay Citadel after eating—the old fortress built where the Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. Climbing up onto the roof gave us this wild view over fishing boats bobbing in blue-green water; I still think about that moment sometimes when I hear gulls back home.

I liked how nothing felt rushed—even when we drove past Pompey’s Pillar or paused for photos at Sidi Morsi Abu al-Abbas Mosque (the tiles there almost shimmered in late sun). The Montazah Palace Gardens were full of families picnicking on grass and couples walking under palm trees; our last stop before heading back toward Cairo. Somewhere along that stretch of coast we pulled over for fresh mango juice from a stand called King of Mango—sticky hands, sweet pulp, no regrets. Not everything went perfectly (my Arabic is hopeless), but honestly that made it better somehow.
