Visit Dendera and Abydos Temples

  • Explore Dendera Temple of Hathor
  • Tour Abydos Temple of Seti I

The Experience

The drive out of Hurghada started before sunrise, the Red Sea fading behind us as we headed inland. By the time we reached Dendera, the air was already warming up, and you could smell fresh bread from a roadside stall near the entrance. Our Egyptologist guide, Mahmoud, met us right by the main gate—he had this way of pointing out details I’d never have noticed on my own. The Temple of Hathor looks almost otherworldly up close: columns carved with faces, colors still peeking through after centuries. There’s a quiet hum inside—just the sound of our footsteps echoing off stone. Mahmoud showed us where Cleopatra VII and her son Caesarion are carved into the wall, dressed in full Egyptian regalia. He explained how pilgrims once came here hoping for healing; there’s even an old sanatorium where people slept, hoping for dreams sent by Hathor herself.

After a quick lunch (the falafel was actually better than I expected—ask for extra tahini), we continued north to Abydos. The road gets quieter here; not many tourists make it this far. When we arrived at Seti I’s temple, it felt like stepping into another world—almost no one else around except a couple of local kids selling postcards near the parking lot. Inside, the reliefs are incredibly detailed; some colors look almost new if you catch them in the right light. Mahmoud pointed out the famous King List—a lineup of pharaohs stretching back to Menes—and told us about Seti I’s obsession with restoring old traditions after Akhenaten’s rule. It’s easy to lose track of time wandering those halls; at one point I just stood still and listened to the wind moving through broken doorways. If you’re lucky with timing, you might get whole chambers to yourself.
