The experience
The day starts with a drive from your Hurghada hotel to Luxor, where you'll begin at Karnak Temple on the east bank of the Nile: the largest temple complex built in ancient Egypt. Your Egyptologist guide walks you through the site and explains the history as you move through the columns and courtyards. After Karnak, you board a felucca, the traditional wooden sailing boat that has crossed the Nile for centuries, and drift to the west bank where the City of the Dead begins.
On arrival, the Colossi of Memnon greet you. Two massive statues that are all that remain of the Temple of Amenhotep III, standing alone in the desert. From there, your guide takes you to the Valley of the Queens or the Valley of the Kings, depending on which option you chose at checkout. The Valley of the Kings holds the tombs of pharaohs including Tutankhamun. The Valley of the Queens contains the burial sites of royal women. You'll have time to explore the tombs and passages inside. Next is the Temple of Hatshepsut, the mortuary temple of one of Egypt's most powerful female rulers, built into the cliffs with terraces that rise dramatically from the desert floor. A stop at the Alabaster Factory shows traditional craftsmanship before lunch at a local restaurant in Luxor.
The tour runs 18 hours door to door. Your guide speaks English, French, German or Russian. Lunch, entrance tickets to all sites, the felucca crossing, and round-trip transport from your hotel are all included. Children from age one are welcome, and strollers are available if you request one when you book.
