The experience
You start with hotel pickup in Cairo and transfer by private air-conditioned car to the Fayoum Oasis, where a 4x4 jeep takes over for the desert portion. The Valley of Rayan is your first stop: a series of lakes fed by natural springs, with waterfalls and clear water where you can swim if you choose. The landscape shifts constantly as you move between sites: from the water and greenery of Rayan to Magic Lake, which sits in a basin of towering dunes and changes color throughout the day as the light moves across it.
Wadi el Hitan (Valley of the Whales) is the paleontological centerpiece. This UNESCO World Heritage Site holds fossilized remains of ancient whales and other marine life from when the region was underwater millions of years ago. The museum and the desert landscape itself tell that story. After exploring the fossils and the striking desert terrain, you move to Modawara Mountain for sandboarding. The operator provides the boards and the setup. Lunch comes next in Tunis village, a working agricultural settlement where local farmers prepare traditional Egyptian food. You'll also have Bedouin tea there.
The full day runs about 10 hours from pickup to return. All entrance fees, the guide, transport by jeep and car, lunch, mineral water and sandboarding are included. The guide speaks your choice of English, Spanish, Italian, French or one other language throughout. The tour is accessible for wheelchair users, and all surfaces and areas are wheelchair accessible. Infants travel on an adult's lap.
