The experience
The route starts at Lake Qarun, one of Egypt's oldest lakes, where the van passes the protected area's rare birds, fish and mammals before switching to a 4x4 for the desert itself. From there, the drive heads to Wadi El Rayan's waterfalls (a short stop to photograph and feed rare birds at the water's edge), then pushes deeper into the Fayoum desert toward Gabal El Mudawara. The mountain is a limestone formation rising about 50 meters high, climbable in 15 to 20 minutes, and from the peak a 360-degree view opens: Magic Lake's deep blue on one side, golden sand dunes on the other, and the vast Fayoum flats below.
Magic Lake is the centerpiece. The saltwater lake sits deep inside sand dunes and shifts color throughout the day, turquoise to deep blue to silver, depending on sun angle and the minerals in the sand beneath it. This is also where sandboarding happens: the lake is ringed by steep dunes that drop straight toward the water's edge, and the board ride down is the main activity there. After the lake, the group heads to Tunis Village, a colorful artists' settlement overlooking Lake Qarun, known for hand-painted houses and pottery workshops. Lunch is a BBQ chicken prepared the local way, followed by a short walk through the village before the return to your hotel.
The tour runs 9 to 10 hours total. A live guide speaks English or Arabic throughout, and hotel pickup is included. The all-inclusive option adds lunch and the camel ride. The second option covers the tour, guide, 4x4 transport and sandboarding without those extras. Specialized infant seats are available for children from age 1. The tour requires at least moderate fitness and is not recommended for pregnant travelers.

Is this one for you?Choose the all-inclusive option if you want the camel ride and a full meal included. Book the tour-only version if you prefer to manage lunch separately and skip the camel. Either way, the 4x4 vehicle and guide stay the same, so the difference is purely what you add to the desert experience itself.
