The experience
What do you actually do on a desert safari that leaves from the city? You start with pickup between 7 and 8 in the morning from your hotel or a spot you choose in Cairo or Giza, then ride 100 minutes in an air-conditioned car to reach the Wadi El Rayan Desert. The drive itself crosses into a different landscape: the waterfalls in the center of the desert mark the boundary between the inhabited valley and the dunes. If the timing is right, you might spot slender-horned gazelles before the guide stops you at the Mudawara Mountains for photographs.
The core of the day is the 4x4 dune bashing: you board the vehicle and it climbs and drops over the soft sand while you hold on. After that comes sandboarding, which is strapping yourself to a board and sliding down a dune at speed. The sensation is closer to sledding than to surfing, and the sand is nothing like snow. You ride a camel next, moving at the pace of a Bedouin traveler across the open desert, then stop at a Bedouin camp where lunch is a BBQ meal. The tour ends with the drive back to Cairo or Giza, dropping you at your hotel or your chosen location.
An Egyptologist guide travels with you throughout and speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French, or Arabic. The vehicle is private, air-conditioned, and fitted for the terrain. Bottled water comes with you, and the sandboarding gear is provided. Children from age 6 are welcome, and the tour is wheelchair accessible, with specialized infant seats available if you need them.
