The Experience

The cruise departs Luxor after a guide meets you at the airport, train station or hotel. Your first day includes Karnak Temple (the largest religious structure ever built, with sanctuaries dating back to the Middle Kingdom), and Luxor Temple, completed by Ramses II in the heart of ancient Thebes. You board the ship that evening and sleep aboard.

Day two takes you across the West Bank to the Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs including Tutankhamun were buried in rock tombs carved into the desert floor. The Temple of Hatshepsut, a masterpiece of ancient architecture built as a mortuary temple for the female pharaoh, stands nearby, as do the Colossi of Memnon: two massive stone statues of Amenhotep III that have stood since 1350 BCE. The ship remains your base while you explore these sites with your guide.

Days three and four move you south by water. You visit the Temple of Horus at Edfu, a Ptolemaic temple built between 237 and 57 BC and preserved so well that its roof still stands, and the double Temple of Kom Ombo, constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty and later added to under Roman rule. On the final full day in Aswan, you see the Aswan High Dam (the world's largest embankment dam, built between 1960 and 1970), and Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis and relocated by UNESCO when the dam threatened to submerge it. A felucca ride on the Nile at sunset rounds out the afternoon. You disembark after breakfast on day five and transfer to the airport, train station or your hotel.

The ship is fully air-conditioned, with a spacious sundeck, tastefully decorated public spaces and attentive staff. Bottled water comes daily. All entrance fees, meals and ground transport in a private vehicle are included. Your guide is a professional Egyptologist who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of three other languages.

What's the difference between the double cabin and single cabin options?

The double cabin sleeps two people. The single cabin is for one person traveling alone. Both are aboard the same ship with the same itinerary, meals and guide service. You choose which one suits your group when you book.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the ship in Luxor?

No. A representative meets you at Luxor Airport, the train station or your hotel and drives you to the ship in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The same service applies on the final day when you leave Aswan.

What exactly is inside the Valley of the Kings?

The Valley of the Kings is the royal cemetery of ancient Egypt's Theban kings and rulers, where pharaohs were buried in rock-cut tombs carved into the desert. Your guide takes you inside several tombs, including that of Tutankhamun, and explains the hieroglyphics and burial practices.

Are meals included throughout the five days?
