You get picked up at your hotel or residence and driven to Encuentro beach, a nature-rustic stretch of sand where surfers and families spend their days in the water. The instructor starts with a brief walk through the beach to show you the place and point out the marine and forest life around it. Then you move to the sand for about fifteen minutes of dry practice: the instructor walks you through the technique of paddling, standing up, foot position, and where to look once you're on the board.
After that you're in the water for around forty minutes of your first session, practicing what you just learned with the instructor watching. You'll get a break for water and bananas, then head back in for a second water session to build on what you've picked up. The instructor stays with you through both, and once the formal lessons finish, you have free time to keep surfing and swimming under guided supervision: no pressure, just the chance to practice more if you want to.
The whole experience runs three hours from pickup to drop-off. You get a surfboard, leash, rash guard shirt, and water shoes for the day. The instructor provides everything except your own swimsuit, sunscreen and towel. On the way back to your hotel, there's a quick stop at a local colmado (neighborhood shop) so you can grab anything you need before heading home.
