The Experience

Someone handed me a plastic cup of rum punch before I’d even found my seat on the catamaran. The music was already going — merengue, I think — and people were laughing like they’d known each other longer than ten minutes. Our guide, Julio, grinned as he helped us stash our shoes in a basket. “Barefoot is better,” he said. I could smell sunscreen and pineapple juice mixing in the air, which felt kind of perfect for Punta Cana.

The boat glided out past Bávaro’s white sand, and suddenly everything was just this wild blue — sky, water, even the life jackets stacked by the double slide. We stopped near the reef where Julio tossed bread into the water; fish darted everywhere, bright yellow stripes flashing. I tried to follow a sharpnose darting through coral but mostly ended up swallowing saltwater (worth it). Snorkeling in Punta Cana’s coral reef is honestly more colorful than any photo can show you — I still think about those fish sometimes when I’m back home doing dishes.

After snorkeling, everyone piled back onboard for snacks — sweet fruit and nachos that tasted way better than they should after swimming. Someone cranked up the music again while we drifted into this waist-deep natural pool. Standing there with a cold drink in hand, water swirling around my knees and sun on my shoulders… well, that’s when it hit me how easy it is to just let go here. Julio showed us how Dominicans toast (“Salud!”), and Li from Toronto tried to repeat it in Spanish but ended up making everyone laugh. There was no rush to get back — just floating, talking, not worrying about anything for once.
