The Experience

You start from your hotel in the morning and climb into a safari truck built for the terrain and built for comfort—wide seats, shade, and a bartender on board. The guide speaks your language (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of a dozen others) and knows the route in detail. The first stop is Higuey, where you step inside an architectural church that anchors the town, then head back out to the countryside proper: mountains rise around you, and the truck slows at sugar cane fields, coffee plantations and cocoa farms. At each one, you taste what grows there—tropical fruit picked that morning, coffee and chocolate made on-site, a mamajuana drink that locals drink themselves. It is not a museum version of rural life; you visit a countryside home and see how people actually live in these villages.

Lunch is a buffet served somewhere in the middle of the day, and the open bar runs the whole time—water, juice, rum, whatever you want. After eating, you ride horses through the landscape (included in the full-day option), then head to Macao Beach for a swim. The beach is a long stretch of sand and water, and you have time to get in, take pictures and dry off before the truck brings you back to your hotel. The full day runs about seven and a half hours from pickup to drop-off. If you book the half-day version instead, you skip Higuey and the beach swim but keep the plantations, the village, the lunch and the horseback riding.
