The experience

You board the 34-foot Trojan at the dock with your group, up to eight people, and head offshore into the Atlantic waters that run along Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete. The twin Yammer engines get you to the fishing grounds fast, and once there you're working with rods and live bait the crew provides. The captain and crew speak English, Spanish, French or German depending on the departure, and they handle the technical side while you focus on the line. Mahi-mahi are the primary target, though billfish show up in these waters. Any billfish you hook gets released back into the ocean.

The day runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., which gives you a solid eight hours on the water. Lunch is a full buffet served aboard, and the boat stocks bottled water, soft drinks, beer and rum throughout the day: no need to bring your own. Round-trip transportation to your hotel or cruise ship terminal is included in the booking, so you don't arrange a separate ride to the dock. A fishing license costs 50 USD per group and is paid directly at the port on the day you fish.

The charter takes groups of five, six, seven or eight people, and you choose your group size at checkout. Children must have an adult with them, and infants sit on a lap. The boat is suitable for all fitness levels, though pregnant travelers should not go out. If you want photos or video of your catch, bring your own camera or phone. DVDs and souvenir prints are not part of the package.
