The Experience

We rolled out of Castries with Pepper waving from the curb — you can’t miss that T-shirt, honestly. The van smelled faintly like coconut sunscreen and something floral I couldn’t place (Pepper said it’s ylang-ylang, which I’ll probably forget). It was just us and two other couples, windows down, music low, heading south along the coast. I kept catching glimpses of the sea between banana trees. Pepper pointed out a breadfruit tree and told us how his grandma makes it roasted with saltfish — he laughed when I tried to say “saltfish” in his accent. Didn’t nail it.

The waterfall came up sooner than I expected — maybe 40 minutes from town? There’s this hush when you step down to it, except for birds and the water itself. The spray is cool but not freezing; you can actually stand under it without losing your breath. We took turns dunking under, and one of the guys let out this wild laugh that echoed off the rocks. Pepper handed around rum punch from his cooler (he insists it’s “the real stuff”) and honestly, it tasted better with wet hair and sun on your back.

Back in the van, towels draped over seats, we headed to the black sand beach — volcanic sand is weirdly soft but gets everywhere (I’m still finding it in my bag). Locals were playing dominoes under a tree; kids ran in and out of the surf yelling at each other in patois. We just sat there for a while drinking Piton beer from Pepper’s stash, letting our feet dry off in the sun. No pressure to rush anywhere — I liked that most about this day trip in St Lucia. There’s something about salt on your skin and no plans for a few hours that sticks with you.
