The experience
Freshwater Lake sits 2,500 feet above sea level in the village of Laudat, a twenty-five minute drive from Roseau. The largest lake in Dominica, it occupies the center of an old volcano and feeds three major waterfalls downstream. A loop trail around the lake takes forty-five minutes to an hour and is optional. The montane forest here grows cooler than the coast, with short trees and open canopy that frame views over Grand Fond and Rosalie.
Ti Tou Gorge is where the day's main swim happens. Located inside Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the gorge narrows into a water-filled channel that leads to a small waterfall. Life jackets are provided, and the swim upriver takes about five minutes: short enough that the canopied light filtering down the mountainside stays the memorable part. The water can be cold, but hot water flows nearby, so you can warm up between swims.
Trafalgar Falls, the twin waterfalls twenty minutes from Roseau, sits at the end of a ten-minute walk on a maintained path. The viewing platform lets you photograph both falls, and if you want to go further, you can wade into the smaller waterfall's pool or find the hot springs at the base of the taller one. The Dominica Botanic Gardens, a forty-acre park in central Roseau, rounds out the day: a piece of the island's heritage that blends botanical collections with local wildlife. Ti Kwen Glo Cho hot springs, the final stop, lets you soak in naturally heated mineral waters surrounded by tropical greenery.
