The Experience

There's something about standing at the edge of water that doesn't quite look like water — Champagne Reef bubbles up from an underwater volcano, and the first thing you notice is the fizz against your skin. You're snorkeling in what looks like a glass of sparkling wine, and it's real enough that you have to touch it to believe it. The reef sits in shallow water off Dominica's coast, and the snorkeling equipment is already waiting for you when you arrive. After that, the day moves fast.

Ti-Tou Gorge is where the real swim happens. You wade into a narrow canyon carved by water, rock walls rising on both sides, and the gorge narrows as you go deeper — it's the same spot where they filmed Pirates of the Caribbean, and the crew filmed it here because there's nowhere else quite like it. A life jacket is required for the swim, and the guide stays close. The water is cold and clear, and the gorge opens up into a pool where you can float and look straight up at the sky. After you climb back out and dry off, there's a short drive to Trafalgar Falls, the twin waterfalls that sit in the island's interior. A ten-minute hike gets you there, and the falls drop into a pool you can wade into if you want.

Lunch happens at the Dominica Botanic Gardens, where the Sisserou Parrot — the national bird — lives in the trees around you. The packed lunch comes with fruit and snacks, and there's Tiffany's Famous Rum Punch if you want it. After you eat, you head to Watten Waven for the hot springs. Tia Hot Springs is a natural sulfur spa pool, and the water is warm and mineral-rich. The sulfur will stain light-colored swimwear, so wear something dark. The whole day moves through Roseau, the French colonial capital, and ends with a drive back to the ship or your hotel. You'll be wet most of the day — that's the point — so pack a change of clothes and bring a towel.
