The Experience

The Champagne Reef Volcano sits just off Pointe Mitchell in water so clear the thermal activity is visible from the surface. You enter the water with a mask, snorkel and fins—all provided up to US size 12—and swim directly into columns of warm bubbles venting from the seafloor. The sensation is immediate and strange: the water around you is heated by geothermal activity, and the bubbles rise in steady streams. A local guide leads the snorkel, and life jackets are on hand for anyone who wants one, though they're not required.

The boat departs from Roseau and includes hotel pickup within the city limits, so you don't arrange transport yourself. Once on the water, the crew serves Kubuli Bear and Tiffany's Rum Punch along with snacks. A minimum of three people per trip is required; if heavy seas or low numbers prevent the boat from running, the same sites are visited by van instead. The three-hour outing covers the thermal vents at Champagne Reef and also takes in the underwater bathes at Soufriere and Scotts Head, both volcanic formations with their own character.

Bring sun protection—hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen only, as spray sunscreen is not permitted. Shade on the boat varies, so plan accordingly. The crew handles national park fees and the environmental management charge (reef tax), and they'll provide snacks and drinks throughout.
