The experience
The tour starts at the Royal Danish Theatre, founded in 1748, and moves through the political and royal heart of Copenhagen on foot. You'll walk past Christiansborg Palace, where the Danish Parliament and Prime Minister's office sit, then to Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Royal Family: time your visit right and you'll catch the Changing of the Guard. The route takes you through Gråbrødretorv Square, a medieval courtyard, and into Copenhagen Cathedral next to the University of Copenhagen in the Latin Quarter.
Rosenborg Castle, a 400-year-old Renaissance building, sits in the middle of the city's green spaces. You'll walk past it and hear its history from your guide. The Round Tower, a 17th-century astronomical observatory, comes next. The tour ends at Nyhavn, where pastel-coloured merchant houses line the canal and your guide shares the history of Copenhagen's Jewish community during World War II as you stroll the waterfront.
Your guide is a local who knows where to eat and what to see beyond the main stops, and they lead only your private group. You'll have time to take photos at each spot, and the whole tour runs about four hours on foot. Attraction tickets are not included, so you can decide which palaces or museums to enter, if any.
