“You ever tried Sachertorte for breakfast?” That’s how our guide, Tomas, broke the ice as we crossed into Austria. I’d barely finished my coffee in Prague before we were winding through Vienna’s streets. It was still early, but the city already felt busy in that gentle way big cities do. The first thing I noticed was the smell of fresh bread drifting out of a bakery near St. Stephen’s Cathedral. People were hurrying past with umbrellas (it had rained overnight), and Tomas pointed out how the stone glistened under the morning light. He seemed to know everyone, or at least he waved like he did.
More like wandering with someone who grew up here and wanted to show you their favorite corners. We ducked into St. Peter’s Church just as the organ started up. I got goosebumps, not sure if it was the music or just being somewhere so old and gold and echoey. Later, walking through Hofburg Palace, Tomas told us stories about Sisi that weren’t in any guidebook (he called her “the original influencer,” which made us laugh). The Belvedere gardens were full of schoolkids on a field trip. One little girl offered me a piece of her apple without saying a word.
I didn’t expect to care much about architecture, but standing outside Hundertwasser House (all those colors and weird shapes). I caught myself grinning like an idiot. It started to drizzle again as we headed toward Schönbrunn Palace, but nobody minded. There was this earthy smell from the wet gravel and hedges that made everything feel more alive somehow. Lunch was quick (schnitzel, obviously), eaten at a little place where the waiter teased me for my accent when I ordered “Apfelschorle.”
By late afternoon I was tired in that good way you get after seeing too much art and walking too many cobblestones. On the drive back to Prague, Tomas played some old Austrian pop songs on low volume. I half-dozed watching fields blur by outside the window. There are bits of Vienna that stick with me now: the sound of church bells echoing off old stone, rain on palace steps, that first bite of cake when you’re not even hungry yet.
