The experience

Someone in our group tried to pronounce “Vitus” like a local: our guide Pavel grinned and didn’t correct him. We started near Malostranská, tram tickets in hand (I almost lost mine before we boarded), and climbed up through the old streets toward Prague Castle. The air was sharp but not too cold, and I kept noticing how everyone seemed to slow down as soon as we crossed into the first courtyard. There’s something about those stone walls that just hushes you a little. Pavel told us about the Defenestration. He made it sound like a wild legend, but then pointed to the exact window. It felt more real than any history book.

The St. Vitus Cathedral is so much bigger than I expected: standing outside, you can smell damp stone and candle wax drifting out when someone opens a side door. We didn’t go inside (that’s another tour), but honestly just seeing those stained glass windows catch a bit of late sun was enough for me. At 11am, we caught the Changing of the Guard with music echoing off the walls. It was both formal and kind of funny because one guard’s hat slipped a little and he barely blinked. Our group laughed quietly: Pavel just winked at us.

Later, wandering through Golden Lane felt like walking into someone’s childhood dream: tiny houses painted blue or yellow, uneven cobbles underfoot, and stories about alchemists trying to make gold out of nothing. I peeked into Kafka’s old house. It still smells faintly musty inside. Someone asked if people actually lived there now (they don’t). We finished near St. George’s Basilica where two towers rise up like something from an old fairy tale. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear church bells back home.
