The Experience

I barely had time to finish my coffee before our guide, Petra, waved us over in front of the Prague Visitor Centre. She had this way of talking—half history lesson, half neighborhood gossip—that made even the cobblestones feel like they’d been waiting for us. We set off toward the Royal Garden and I remember the air smelled faintly of linden trees (or maybe it was just my imagination). The garden itself felt quiet in that early hour—just a few locals walking dogs, and the sound of gravel under our shoes. Petra pointed out where medieval vineyards once grew, which I wouldn’t have guessed if she hadn’t said it.

We wandered past the Ball Games Hall (I still don’t really know what kind of games they played there), then suddenly found ourselves in front of St. Vitus Cathedral. The sun hit those stained glass windows just right—sort of gold and blue at once—and I caught myself staring longer than I meant to. There was a group of school kids giggling near St. George’s Square; their teacher tried to wrangle them but gave up after a minute. Jiřská Street was narrow and cool, shaded by old stone walls. Honestly, I lost track of all the courtyards—Second? Third? Petra kept us moving with stories about kings and cooks and one very unlucky alchemist.

After winding through Southern Gardens (which smelled like wet grass), we climbed up the Bull Staircase—my legs noticed that part more than my brain did—and landed in Hradčanské Square. That’s when Loreto came into view: bells chiming softly, people lighting candles inside. Petra taught me how to say “Loreta” properly; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Czech—probably butchered it. We finished at Strahov Monastery where the city just sort of unfolded below us: red rooftops, twisting Vltava River, towers poking through morning mist. I still think about that view sometimes.
