The Experience

Hands gripping the cool stone, I squeezed through a gap in the Tisa Rocks — our guide Pavel just ahead, grinning like he knew a secret. He’d grown up near here, so every twist in the path came with a story or some half-remembered legend. The air smelled like pine needles and wet earth. I kept thinking about how these rocks ended up in that Narnia movie — honestly, it did feel a bit like stepping into another world, minus the talking animals.

We’d started out early from Prague (pickup was smooth — I barely finished my coffee), and by mid-morning we were wandering among these sandstone towers. The wind made this low whistling sound between them. Pavel pointed out places where film crews had set up; he laughed when I tried to pronounce “Tiské stěny” properly — not even close. There was time to climb up for views over the canyon; I remember my hands getting gritty from the rock, and that feeling of being somewhere old and strange.

Lunch came just as my legs started complaining — a proper sit-down meal with veggie options (I went for something with mushrooms; can’t remember the name but it was good). After that we crossed into Germany for Saxon Switzerland National Park. The Bastei Bridge looked almost unreal against the sky. It’s high above the river Elbe — you can see table mountains all around if you look past the crowds. We wandered along easy trails to different viewpoints; at one spot it got quiet enough to hear birds echoing off the cliffs. If you’re lucky with weather, there’s supposed to be an amazing sunset here… we got clouds instead, but honestly it didn’t matter much.
