Summary

Walk sandstone labyrinths, cross legendary bridges and taste Czech beer on a wild day from Prague

You’ll step into storybook landscapes at Tisa Rocks, taste real Czech beer over lunch in a cozy park restaurant, and get rare private access to Pravcicka Gate before crossing Bastei Bridge’s dramatic cliffs—all with pickup from your hotel and a local guide who knows every shortcut (and joke). Expect muddy boots and memories that linger long after you’re home.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We rolled out of Prague just after sunrise, that sleepy city hum fading behind us as our guide, Jirka, steered the van north. He had this way of mixing stories about the Bohemian countryside with odd bits of trivia—I learned more about Czech beer before 9am than I’d expected. The drive to Bohemian Switzerland didn’t feel long; maybe it was the coffee or just how the landscape kept shifting outside the window. By the time we pulled up near Tisa Rocks, there was this damp pine smell in the air—like rain had just missed us. I tugged my jacket tighter and tried not to look like I was already impressed.

Tisa really does feel like something out of a storybook. Jirka pointed to a narrow path between sandstone towers and said, “Narnia started here.” I laughed but he was serious—the movie filmed right here. The rocks were cold under my hand, rough in places and smooth in others where rain had worn them down over centuries. We wandered through these corridors that twisted and opened up suddenly into little clearings. At one point I stopped to listen—just wind moving through cracks, someone’s boots crunching behind me. There’s something about being surrounded by stone that makes you quieter inside too.

Lunch came at this wooden place tucked inside the park—honestly, I can’t remember its name now but I do remember how good that first sip of local beer tasted after hiking. Warm bread, something with mushrooms (I let Jirka order for me), laughter echoing off wood beams. It felt like everyone in our small group had known each other longer than a few hours—maybe that’s what happens when you’re all a bit muddy and tired together.

The Pravcicka Gate was next—a walk uphill through fir trees until it suddenly loomed above us, huge and strange against the sky. We got special weekday access (Jirka winked about “VIP” treatment), so for a while it felt like we had this ancient arch to ourselves. Standing there looking out over forests rolling into Germany…yeah, I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the tram back home.

Bastei Bridge came last—a quick hop across the border into Saxony, Germany—and it was all craggy cliffs and river far below, mist curling around everything. The bridge itself is old stone but feels light somehow when you’re walking across it; maybe it’s just all that open space underneath your feet. My camera couldn’t do any of it justice but I tried anyway. By the time we headed back toward Prague, boots muddy and heads full of new stories, nobody really wanted to talk much—we just watched the last bit of light fade over fields outside the window.
