The Experience

The first thing I remember is our guide, Ana, waving at us near that old meteorological station in Zrinjevac Park — she had this easy way of making you feel like you’d known her for ages. We started there, under chestnut trees, and right away she pointed out how locals always check the weather on that little column before heading to Ban Jelačić Square. Never would’ve noticed that myself. There was a guy feeding pigeons nearby and the smell of fresh bread from somewhere — it felt so “everyday” but also kind of special.

We wandered through Ban Jelačić Square (Ana called it the city’s living room), then up to Zagreb Cathedral. The bells were ringing just as we arrived — louder than I expected, almost echoing off the stone. She told us about the different architectural styles patched together over centuries; I tried to spot them all but got distracted by a woman selling strawberries at Dolac Market. The market itself was a riot of red umbrellas and chatter — if you go before 2pm you’ll catch it in full swing. I bought cherries, probably paid too much, but didn’t care.

After Opatovina (which Ana said is where everyone comes for drinks after work), we ducked into Grič Tunnel — it was cooler inside and smelled faintly of concrete and something metallic. There was this odd silence down there, except for distant footsteps. Then came my favorite bit: the funicular ride up to Upper Town. It’s honestly so short you barely have time to blink, but somehow it made me laugh anyway. The view from Strossmayer promenade just... opens up over Zagreb; roofs everywhere and the Sava river far off in the haze.

We finished at Stone Gate — people still light candles there every day, Ana explained quietly. She showed us how to touch the old wall for luck (I did). The tour ended back at Ban Jelačić Square but Ana stuck around answering questions about museums and where to find good coffee (her answer: “Depends how picky you are”). I still think about that brief hush inside Stone Gate sometimes — funny what sticks with you after a day like this.
