The Experience

Our guide Marko stopped us halfway up the stone steps to Klis Fortress and pointed to a section of wall. "That's where they filmed the Meereen scenes," he said, then laughed a little. "Before the show, nobody came here. Now we get three hundred people a day." The fortress sits high enough that you can see the whole city below — the Adriatic beyond it — and it's the kind of view that made the production designers choose this place in the first place. You spend about an hour at Klis with your guide, walking through the medieval fortress while they explain which scenes were shot where and what the actual history of the place is, not just the TV version.

After Klis, you head back down into Split Old Town, where the real weight of the Game of Thrones tour hits. The substructures of Diocletian's Palace — the underground chambers and vaulted passages — are where they filmed King's Landing scenes, and standing in those narrow stone corridors, you understand why. The palace itself is a Roman ruin from the 4th century, so the production didn't have to build much; they just lit it differently and added actors. Your guide walks you through the alleys and squares above ground too, pointing out where specific scenes happened, which buildings were dressed up as what, and telling you the actual history of Split alongside the fiction. It's not just "here's where they filmed," it's "here's why this place mattered before the cameras showed up."
