The experience
Two hours in a working ceramic studio in Raša, a small coalmine town 4km from Labin, means you see the whole arc of how clay becomes pottery, from raw material through handbuilding, wheel throwing, glazing and firing. Your mentor, either Masimo or Piero from the Merania family, starts by demonstrating how to throw simple forms, including the bukaleta, a traditional wine jug. Then you sit at your own wheel with a small amount of clay and begin. They guide you through the basics step by step, helping you shape a few forms of your choice. The pace is hands-on. You're not watching a demonstration.
After wheel throwing, they show you handbuilding techniques that work without the wheel: a different way of working the clay that many people find equally interesting. The clay pieces you make leave with you the same day, though they're not yet fired and will break easily. Firing happens in the studio over the next one to two weeks. If you want the finished ceramic pieces sent to you, shipping costs extra, but that's arranged after the firing is complete.
Coffee and tea are included. The workshop runs from 9:30 to 11:30, and the studio welcomes children from age 6 onward. If you use a wheelchair, the space is accessible. The experience works for any fitness level, though it's not recommended for people with spinal injuries.
