The Experience

The driver arrived ten minutes early, which sounds small until you realize it meant we weren't rushing through the hotel lobby with half-packed bags. Our guide pointed out which pools were safe for swimming and which ones weren't, and the park was busy but not overwhelmed when we arrived mid-morning. The boat ride down to Skradin at the end is included in the park entry fee, and it's the kind of thing that feels like a bonus even though it's part of the plan — you float past the lower falls and the river opens up wider as you approach the town.

Skradin is small, maybe a thousand people, and they give you an hour and a half to eat lunch or just sit by the water. We found a restaurant that wasn't trying too hard, ordered fish that had been caught that morning, and watched other tourists do the same thing at the tables next to us. The return drive to Split takes the same route back, and by then the day has a rhythm to it — you've moved through three different landscapes and you're not exhausted, just satisfied in the way that happens when a day is structured but doesn't feel rushed.
