The Experience
"You have to try this one—my grandfather swears by it," our guide Luka grinned, holding out a slice of prosciutto so thin I could almost see the sunlight through it. We’d just left the roar of Krka’s waterfalls behind us, shoes still damp from the wooden walkways (I didn’t expect the spray to reach that far), and now we were in this tiny stone village somewhere inland from Šibenik. The air smelled like wild herbs and woodsmoke, and honestly, I was more tired than I thought I’d be after all that wandering around Skradinski Buk. But sitting at that old wooden table, with glasses clinking and Luka’s uncle popping in to say hello in rapid Croatian, it felt like we’d stumbled into someone’s family lunch.
The day started way quieter—private pickup right outside our apartment in Split, which was a relief because I’m useless before coffee. The drive through the Dalmatian countryside was slow enough to actually see things: olive groves, stone walls, a few sheep (one stared straight at me—still cracks me up). At Krka National Park, Luka handed us tickets and let us go at our own pace. No rush, no flag-waving groups. The waterfalls really are loud—you feel them in your chest—and there’s this green smell everywhere from the moss and river water. We took about a million photos but my favorite bit was just standing on the bridge listening to kids laughing somewhere upstream.
We made a quick stop for coffee in Skradin—tiny town, sleepy vibe even though it was midday. The espresso was strong enough to wake anyone up. After that came the winery visit. It wasn’t some fancy operation; just an old cellar lined with barrels and family photos on the wall. The owner explained their winemaking in English mixed with gestures (and some help from Luka). Tasting three local wines with salty cheese and that paper-thin prosciutto… I still think about that view over the vineyards as the sun started dipping down. There’s something about sharing food with strangers who suddenly don’t feel like strangers anymore.
