The car leaves Split early, heading south along the coast toward the Neretva river delta—the place where pirates used to operate, now famous for strawberries and citrus stalls that line the road. You'll cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina (passport required), and by 11:30 you're walking into Dubrovnik's Old Town with a local guide who knows which corners hold the real history. Onofrio's fountain, the Franciscan monastery, the church of St. Blaise, Orlando's column—these aren't just names on a list. Your guide walks you through them, explains what they meant, and then steps back. That's when the day becomes yours.

For 2.5 hours you're free to move at your own pace. Some people swim at Sveti Jakov Beach, which sits close enough to the old walls that you can see them from the water. Others eat lunch in a restaurant tucked into a side street, or climb the city walls alone. There's no schedule pushing you forward, no group waiting. After that break, you're back in the air-conditioned vehicle for what the guide calls the Panorama tour—a drive to the cable car viewpoint where the entire city spreads below you, then on to the Ombla River, one of the shortest rivers in the world, and finally to the top of Dubrovnik Bridge for the view most postcards come from. The drive back to Split takes the late afternoon, and you arrive as the light softens.
