The experience
The tour starts at Pile Square near the Pile Gate, the Old Town's western entrance, where you meet your guide. From there it's a short walk to the cable car station. The ride up Mt. Srđ takes you over the city and out across the Adriatic. The descent gives you the same view in reverse, so the landscape stays with you both ways. At the top, there's time to stand and look before heading back down.
Once you're back in the Old Town, the guide walks you down Stradun, the main promenade, pointing out the Dominican Monastery, Onofrio's Great Fountain, Orlando's Column, the Church of St. Blaise, the Rector's Palace, and the Cathedral. The walk covers roughly 1,200 meters over cobblestone and flat ground, with up to 200 steps along the way. This part of the tour is moderate in pace and covers the history of the city's top landmarks.
At the end of the guided portion, you get your ticket for the Dubrovnik City Walls. These walls, built between the 13th and 17th centuries, run almost 2 km around the Old Town and are considered one of Europe's finest fortification systems. You walk them on your own schedule, the same day, so you can take breaks, linger at viewpoints, or move through quickly depending on your energy and time.
