The Experience
“You see that orange roof? My grandmother lives there,” our guide Ana said, pointing as the cable car climbed above Dubrovnik. The glass shook just a little in the wind — not scary, but enough to make me laugh nervously. The whole city looked like it was floating on blue glass, and you could smell pine from somewhere up the mountain. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it didn’t catch even half of what you feel up there.
Back down in Old Town, Ana led us through Stradun where laundry flapped between windows and a cat darted under someone’s feet (she called him “the real mayor”). She told stories about Sponza Palace and St Blaise’s Church — I remember her voice echoing off the stone. There were kids chasing pigeons near Onofrio’s Fountain, and for a second I just stood still because it all felt so old but alive at once. We passed the Dominican Monastery and she explained how the city walls kept everyone safe for centuries — not sure I’d want to be a guard in summer heat though.
At the end Ana handed us our Dubrovnik city walls tickets with a grin (“Now you get to climb!”). Walking those stones alone was something else — rough under my hand, sea air everywhere, views that made me stop more than I thought I would. There was this moment near Minčeta Tower where everything went quiet except for seagulls and some distant church bells. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
