You're picked up from your San Jose hotel at 6am, driven to Puntarenas with breakfast, then board a catamaran with live music and snacks for a 1.5-hour crossing to Tortuga Island. Spend four hours swimming and relaxing on the protected island's white-sand beach, enjoy lunch included, then return by boat and bus to your hotel in the evening. The fixed schedule means you skip the logistics of getting to the coast and timing the boats yourself.
The pickup happens early — 6am from downtown San José — which means you're on a bus heading toward the coast while most of the city is still asleep. It sounds brutal until you realize that's the only way to catch the catamaran at Puntarenas by 9:30am and actually have a full afternoon on the island itself. A light breakfast and tropical fruit come during the drive, so you're not hungry by the time you board. The bus ride takes about two hours, and honestly, it gives you time to settle in before the real day starts.
Once you hit Puntarenas, you board the catamaran for the 1.5-hour cruise across the Gulf of Nicoya to Tortuga Island. The boat is set up for this — there's live music playing, and they serve ceviche, natural drinks, and snacks as you're moving across the water. It's not a quiet, meditative crossing; it's a party boat with a purpose, and by the time you arrive at 10:30am, you've already eaten twice and you're ready to actually be somewhere. Tortuga Island sits 12 nautical miles offshore, a protected forest with an Ecological Blue Flag rating, and the water around it is that almost-unreal turquoise you see in photos and assume are edited.
You get roughly four hours on the island — enough time to swim in water so clear you can see your feet, walk the white sand, maybe snorkel if you brought gear or want to rent it. The island is small, 120 hectares, and it's kept that way on purpose; there's no development, no vendors, just beach and trees and birds. Lunch happens on the island, included with the tour, and then it's the return catamaran ride back to Puntarenas and the bus back to San José. You're back in your hotel by evening, tired in the way that feels good.
The whole day is structured around the boat schedule, which means you don't have to figure out how to get to Puntarenas, when to leave, or whether you've timed it right. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for selected hotels in the San José area, so if you're staying downtown or in the metro, you just walk outside at 6am and the bus is there.
