You drive to Puntarenas, board a boat to Tortuga Island, snorkel for 45 minutes with gear included, then spend five unrushed hours on the beach with lunch and drinks provided. The return journey gets you back to San José by evening, so you don't lose the next day to travel.
You leave San José in an air-conditioned vehicle early enough to reach Puntarenas before the boat fills up. The drive itself is part of the day — two hours down to the coast, past towns and farmland, with your guide pointing out the Gulf of Nicoya as it comes into view. Once you board, the boat heads toward Tortuga Island and the dolphins often show up during the crossing. You're not hunting them; they're just there, moving through the water while the islands of the gulf pass on either side. The snorkel happens first, 45 minutes with equipment provided, in water clear enough that you actually see what you came for.
Then you get five hours on the beach. That's the real gift of this Tortuga Island tour — not a rushed stop, but actual time to sit under the palms, swim in turquoise water that's warm enough you don't think about it, or just lie there and let the day happen. Lunch arrives on the island, fresh and full, so you're not eating from a cooler. Coffee and seasonal fruit come earlier, during the boat ride, so there's no hunger gap between leaving San José and settling in.
The return boat leaves in the afternoon, and you're back in Puntarenas by early evening, then driven back to San José as the light changes. It's a long day — the kind where you actually feel the distance you've traveled, but not in a way that exhausts you. Families with small children do this regularly; strollers work fine on the boat and the beach.
