The experience

You meet the guide at the diving center at 6:40 am, try on the snorkeling gear to make sure it fits, then walk to the beach for a small boat transfer to the 38-foot vessel. After roughly 45 minutes crossing open water, you reach the Catalina Islands, or Cabo Velas if wind makes the first choice rough. The boat becomes your base between two snorkeling sessions, both led by the guide who stays with you underwater and points out what moves through the reefs.

Between sessions you sit on deck with tropical fruit and water, watching the water and the sky. Whales pass through these waters during migration season, and the guide will call them out if they surface. You're back at the diving center by noon, which is early enough to grab lunch ashore or head somewhere else without the day feeling rushed.

The guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian depending on the group. All snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, wetsuit) comes with you. Bring a towel, sunscreen, hat and a light jacket for the boat ride, which can be breezy even when the water is calm. The outing suits anyone with moderate fitness. Children under 8 cannot join, and the maximum age is 80.
