The experience

You start on Tamarindo Beach with a 20-minute kayak lesson if you haven't paddled before, then set off directly from the sand for a 30–40 minute paddle out to Captain Island. The route follows the Tamarindo coastline and takes you over clear water where you can already spot marine life below. Your bilingual guide paddles alongside and sets the pace.

Once you reach Captain Island, you spend about 45 minutes snorkeling around the reef. The water here holds octopus, stingrays, eels and a variety of tropical fish, plus coral formations. You can choose a single kayak or double kayak before the tour starts, and the guide stays in the water with you to point out what's below and answer questions. After snorkeling, you paddle back to the beach and finish with a snack and water.

The whole outing runs 2.5 hours and depends on the tide. The operator will send you the exact departure time once you book. Bring a bathing suit, sunscreen and a towel.
