The experience
The catamaran leaves the beach in Tamarindo and sails along the Gold Coast, where the crew scans for dolphins, sea turtles, flying fish, whales and rays while you watch from the deck with a cold drink in hand. The boat is purpose-built for this route: open and spacious so you're not crowded, with shaded areas in the main salon and sun decks if you want to stay dry. If conditions allow, fishing lines go out off the back, though the focus is the wildlife and the water itself.
When the catamaran reaches one of the secluded bays, you get in the water. Snorkel equipment, life vests, pool noodles and stand-up paddleboards are available. If you'd rather not swim, the boat is comfortable enough to stay aboard and watch the coastline. The crew prepares everything while you're in the bay, so there's no logistics to manage on your end.
Around 4:30pm, lunch arrives: BBQ chicken or pasta salad, yellow rice, black beans, fresh fruit, chips, pico de gallo and homemade chocolate chip cookies. The open bar runs through the meal and the sail back: Imperial, Miller and Coors Light beer; Flor de Caña rum, Absolut vodka, Jack Daniels, Tanqueray gin, Jose Cuervo tequila; Frontera wine; soft drinks and juices. You arrive back at the beach as the sun sets, disembarking in Tamarindo or Playa del Coco depending on which departure point you chose.
