The Experience
The zip line platform appears through the canopy before you've finished your coffee. You're standing on the slope of Rincón de la Vieja volcano in Guanacaste, about to clip into a harness and move through the trees at a speed that makes your stomach catch — and then it doesn't, because the view opens up and you're just flying. The canopy tour runs through the forest here, and after you've landed and your hands have stopped shaking a little, you walk straight into the next thing: a 450-meter waterslide that drops you into a pool so cold it feels like a reset button. People come out laughing or gasping or both.
By mid-morning you're sitting down to a buffet lunch — rice, beans, plantains, fresh fish, the kind of food that tastes like someone's grandmother made it, because someone's grandmother probably did. After you eat, you can choose: horseback riding or a tractor ride through the forest for about thirty minutes to reach a waterfall that's thirty meters high. Most people bring a camera. Then comes the part that sounds weird until you're actually in it — the natural sauna, the volcanic mud bath, the mineral hot spring water. Your skin feels different afterward, softer or something. There's also a hanging bridge to cross, and if you want, a cooking class with local women who'll show you how they make traditional Costa Rican dishes and let you taste what you've made.
On the way back to your hotel, the driver can stop in Liberia City if you want to shop. The local market is where people from Guanacaste actually buy things, so the prices are better than the tourist shops near the resorts. Pickup starts at 7:30 a.m. from selected hotels — Riu Guanacaste, Secrets Papagayo, Dreams Las Mareas, Four Seasons, Westin Playa Conchal, JW Marriott — and the company picks up from other vacation homes around the province if you call ahead to arrange it.
