The experience

You're staying near Playa Hermosa and have a full day free. A private fishing charter means the boat, the captain and the crew work for your group only: no other anglers, no shared schedule. The Evil Panda is a new boat built for this work, with a large bathroom on board and a knowledgeable captain who knows where the fish are running. You'll fish for dorado, sailfish, marlin, yellow fin tuna, snapper, wahoo and rooster, depending on the season and what's biting. The crew handles all the equipment. You show up and fish.

Food, soda, bottled water, snacks and fresh fruit come with the charter. You can choose the music playing on deck. The eight-hour day also means time on the water, not a rushed half-day, so you're there when the fish are active. Wildlife sightings happen: dolphins, turtles and occasionally whales pass through these waters, though they're never guaranteed. The captain and crew speak English and Spanish, so language isn't a barrier to understanding what's happening or asking questions about technique.

Pickup is included, so you don't arrange your own transport to the boat. The only thing you need to bring is a moderate level of fitness for standing, casting and working a rod for hours at a time. Infants must sit on an adult's lap during the ride out.
