The experience

The morning air felt salty and cool as we met our guide right on the sand at Playas del Coco. He was already chatting with a couple of local fishermen. Everyone seemed to know each other here. The boat wasn’t flashy, but it had everything we needed: rods lined up, a cooler packed with water and fruit, and that faint hum of excitement you get before heading out to sea.

We cruised into the Papagayo Gulf just as the sun started warming up the water. Out here, you can spot pelicans diving for their breakfast and sometimes even dolphins if you’re lucky. Our guide, Carlos, pointed out the best spots for red snapper and grouper. He knew these waters like his own backyard. I remember the tug on my line when a mahi-mahi bit.
