The experience

How do you get to an active volcano without renting a car? The tour picks you up at your hotel in Alajuela and drives you toward the crater in an air-conditioned vehicle, so the only thing you arrange is the booking. As you ascend, the landscape shifts. You'll pass flower farms, strawberry fields, ornamental plant nurseries and cattle ranches, each one marking a change in altitude and climate. The central valley spreads below, and by the time you reach the park entrance, you've already seen why this region is known for its agriculture.

At 2,708 meters high, Poás is an active volcano, and the crater is the reason you came. The National Park has established a viewing point where you stand safely and watch the crater itself: its scale and the gas fumes rising from it are what make the trip concrete rather than a hike through scenery. A bilingual guide explains the phreatic and fumarolic activity happening beneath your feet, the different ecosystems layered across the park, and the lush vegetation that thrives at this altitude. You have roughly an hour at the crater before the tour departs at 10:30 a.m., returning to your hotel by noon.

The park provides safety equipment and procedures, and the tour is wheelchair accessible throughout: all areas and surfaces accommodate mobility devices. Children from age 4 onward travel on the tour. Infants can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized infant seat if you request one when booking.
