The experience

Irazú Volcano sits just an hour from San Jose, rising to 3,432 meters as Costa Rica's highest active volcano. The tour reaches the main crater, where a turquoise lagoon and fumaroles mark the summit, and you have time to photograph the view and explore Playa Negra, a volcanic formation of black rock. On clear days the vista stretches to both oceans. Your guide shares the volcano's geology and history as you walk the park, and there is free time to hike higher if you want the incomparable views from the peak.

From the volcano, the route descends into Orosi Valley, a colonial-era landscape ringed by coffee and sugar cane plantations. The valley witnessed pirate raids, earthquakes and floods, and the Franciscan orders who built the first Catholic temples in Costa Rica left their mark here. You stop at the valley viewpoint to take in the panorama and rest among the green mountains before moving on to Lankester Gardens, a research center of the University of Costa Rica protecting more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and other plants. A Japanese garden on the grounds offers quiet space and photo opportunities.

Lunch happens at Casona Del Cafetal Restaurant, set on a property overlooking Cachí Lake: an artificial reservoir built to supply hydroelectric power to Cartago. Trails cross the grounds past coffee plantations and give you different angles on the lake. After lunch, the tour ends at the Basilica of the Angels in Cartago, the country's most important church and the center of pilgrimage to the Virgin of the Angels. Your guide explains the stone of discovery and the museum inside, and you can drink holy water if you wish. The whole day runs about seven and a half hours, including the drive back to your hotel in San Jose.
